Daily Endeavor. Day-in-the-life job profiles written by real people

Factsheet

What is Daily Endeavor?

Daily Endeavor is a free project to build the most comprehensive guide to jobs that's written by real people. It's a place to describe highlights, lowlights and a day-in-the-life for a given type of job. Individuals can write reviews, and the best ones are voted up by the community.

What problem does Daily Endeavor solve?

When thinking about what's next, every single person first asks "what are my options?" Then, they ask "what's that job really like?" Despite the 160,000+ types of job in the US alone, there is no resource to answer these essential questions with the information most people want.

We want to help everyone answer questions like "What's it like to work as a manager at a charter school network?" and "How do I get a job in human rights advocacy?" and "Is there a need for real estate expertise in microlending?" You know, the stuff that gets asked everyday at tables in Starbucks across the country. Like Wikipedia, it's a place to start your research.

Why now?

As the largest professional migration in history is about to begin, with 100 million people — Millennials, Boomers, the underemployed and the unemployed — beginning to head for their next job, they're heading straight into a wall. This is a problem.

Instead of quickly vetting a broad set of options that could be a good fit, and discovering roles they never knew existed, too many will get stuck in the information gap ("What's out there?"), eventually settling for a job that's fine but doesn't really turn them on. That's not exactly powering the economy or their nest egg back to life.

There's a unique window of time right now where — together — we can all help each other recover. By sharing our own expertise, we can help turn on a light bulb for someone else. And we can all come back stronger than when this economic meltdown began.

Who benefits?

Ultimately, everyone of working age and every student on their way there.

We want to help 20-somethings who are coming out of college and into the workforce for the first time; Boomers who have a world of experience and are just gearing up for their next act; the underemployed and unemployed; and everyone in between.

Initially, we're focusing on social change areas, both because they're some of the largest levers, and because they're actually hiring — K-12 education, microfinance and human rights.

How is Daily Endeavor different from other sites?

Daily Endeavor compiles single author reviews into structured summaries that describe a day-in-the-life for types of jobs.

By design, there are a number of things we're not doing. Daily Endeavor is not a job listings site. There are loads of good ones out there and we will partner with many of them. It also isn't a place to review organizations. Experiences vary so much from person to person that we believe figuring out whether you want to work with a team or a manager is best handled by talking with that team or manager.

Who's involved?

Daily Endeavor is brought to you by the same people who developed Endeavor Prep, and other alumni from Socialtext. The team is based in New York City, with other core members distributed in Washington DC, Barcelona and Santa Cruz. Matthew Mahoney first prototyped the site when interviewing Harvard undergrads about their career plans in 2005.
