A teaching license is necessary in order to get a job in a public school. A license can be obtained at any college or university that has an Education Department. Keep in mind that licenses are state-specific so if you complete licensing requirements in one state but seek a job in another state, you'll need to look at reciprocity agreements or be prepared to take additional courses to satisfy the other state's requirements. Many urban school districts offer alternative licensing programs that allow people to earn their license while on the job. Job openings in public schools are found on the city's district website where online submission of application materials is now the norm. Many districts also hold job fairs in the early spring so be sure to keep an eye out for those.

Unfortunately, the job market for teachers is tough. There are many teachers our there looking for jobs and so your best bet is to show your dedication and hard work right from the start. There is a licensure requirement that many people can start during their undergraduate degree and some school offer a post-baccalaureate program for those people wanting to go back and get a teaching degree. A good mentor teacher during your student teacher experience is a big help because in this profession you learn so much in the classroom. Volunteering in other teacher's classroom is a great way to learn from them and then you can use that learning to help set you a part from other candidates. It is common to start your career as a substitute teacher and you want to show the school your hard work and dedication, so that they can think of you when it comes time to hire a new teacher.

Must have an A in student teaching. Must be willing to put in long hours - not just the hours being paid. Must have a ton of energy and enthusiasm. Must impress the administration during interviews that you are the right person for this spot. Must have a vision of what you want to accomplish.
