Most people are attracted to this position because they love working with children and building a culture of learning. Many are also attracted to what seems like a short work day. However, in order to be an effective classroom teacher, the work does not end at 3:00 PM. Because there is very little downtime during school hours, teachers find that they have to wait until the children leave for the day in order to plan lessons, grade assignments and prepare for special projects.

What attracts people to this job is the idea that you can make a difference and help brighten the future of many children. Who doesn't have that favorite teacher that helped to inspire them to dream and who gave them the tools needed to reach that dream? Teaching is a very rewarding profession and you are able to see the way a child's face lights up when they finally understand a new concept. The stories that you take away each day are priceless and that is what keeps teachers coming back year after year.

The attraction is that they really want to make a difference to children. They love the interaction with the students who in turn respect and love them. The teachers usually cry at the end of the year when they know they are losing some of the most precious children they have ever met. Also, working with fellow teachers who are supportive and become your friends can be the best.
