In order to do well in this job, you really do need to love working with children. There will be many times when the work seems to overwhelm you but as long as your core motivation is to help children, you'll be able to get through those times. You'll need to be an expert in reading and math instruction, understand how children learn and be an incredible multi-tasker. Amazing peripheral version, the ability to effectively communicate with parents and a collaborative work style will also help you thrive in this job.

Teaching is very rewarding, but that comes along with planning and organization. In order to see success you need to be able to develop a stable classroom structure where students know the expectations and can work together or alone on any tasks. Connecting with students and parents is another key component to your success in the classoom. In the public school setting there is a big emphasis on testing as a result of no child left behind. You need to be able to demonstrate your student's learning through their test scores and so frequent assessments and checks on their understanding is critical. Also, no single person can be good at everything, so collaboration between teachers and the sharing of ideas is essential.

An effective but direct ability to communicate with parents. A willingness to give individual attention to each student in the class. This may mean individualized plans for certain students, which is time-consuming. A sense of humor is basic. Must be able to laugh with the class. Must be willing to share a part of themselves that is personal.
