I taught 8th grade Reading in a rural school district for 26 years and can honestly say it was my dream career.

This is my first year of teaching full-time! Like any job, it has its ups and downs. I love going to work every morning knowing I'm going to see 22 smiling faces. Their thirst for knowledge is amazing.

Coaching a 7th grade girl's field hockey team is challenging and rewarding. Teaching and becoming friends with the girls is very fulfilling and rewarding but the job was also difficult at times. The good aspects outweighed the bad. Organization and patience are essential.
A great opportunity to learn a little bit about alot of topics, but difficult to gain the kind of deep experience in a specific field or area of research to become an expert. Expect to often feel like a second class citizen to consultants, but if you are entrepreneurial, and creative, you can do some really exciting, meaningful work.

The job consists of 1-4 month projects on teams of 2-4, working on a variety of strategic and operational questions for a wide range of industries. Overall, it's an incredible learning experience with fantastic exit opportunities for someone just out of college.

Half of your time is spent consulting with microfinance institutions on their marketing and product development projects (eg. launching a microinsurance program). Half of your time is spent doing research on best practices and developing relationships in the industry.
Was a great experience and I learned a great, great deal. However, as with any non-profit, the compensation was low and tough to live on long-term for me. In the short-term though, provided me with great international experience while being able to stay in NYC.

This is a great way to share your expertise and personal network with an impactful and important cause. For smaller schools, there may be more of a focus on operational issues and oversight (hiring, financial decisions etc), whereas larger schools may be more interested in fund-raising and PR.
Meaningful if you're passionate and can remain so in the face of set backs. Substantively very interesting: have your choice of issues to work on but procedurally can be challenging. Working with gov. deptments means bureaucratic red tape and politics while partnerships with civil orgs means funding issues and need for flexibility regarding goals.
